Hi Oz ...I was wondering if you had any links on fasting you'd be willing to share. I just started reading up on intermittent fasting, still alot of reading left, but it's something that's sparked my intrest. I know you normally use a 24 hour fast so I thought you might have some good input. Thanks.

Thanks for the post on the resources thread. Real interesting site, never seen one like it. I was going to thank you on the thread, but decided it was better to leave it uncluttered.

Hello sweetheart I am really pleased that you are recovering albeit slowly ... at least you are heading in the right direction. xxx
  4. jaqi
Hello Oz... hope you're recovering well ... and also that everything is okay with you? I was dancing at Brent Town Hall last monday and dancing in Slough tomorrow night becoming a right gadabout again and it's great! xxx Karen
  5. jaqi
Hope everything is okay with you? Have you been busy working? I am back on shift... day 4 of 8 done and dusted today. Got the early start tomorrow so have to be up just before 5am I don't like the early mornings in the winter... my car windscreen was actually covered in ice this morning ! How bad is that? xxx
  6. _OZ_
Glad to hear you're noticing improvements and that others are noticing it too. It's really encouraging when others make positive comments. How far do you want to take it? How lean do you want to become? For me i'd like to be lean enough to see my abs clearly. The closer I get the harder it becomes. My training is going good. I've outgrown my spinlock adjustable dumbbells so am part-exchanging some of my equipment for selectorised ones. I managed to find a good deal on Powerblocks.

Work is going ok. I had planned to sit promotion exams in March 2010 but can't find the motivation to study. I should have started by now. I can't find the time.

How did you get started in dancing?
  7. jaqi
I do hope your training is going well too. What have you been up to? Has it been all work and no play? I managed to get dancing last night which was really good as there were some nice male dancers there even though it wasn't especially busy. It was a masked ball till 1pm so I felt a little jaded this morning as I didn't get to bed till late and didn't sleep too well either... felt it especially at the gym xxx I do look forward to your messages
  8. jaqi
Training has been really good as I wasn't sure it would fit in with the time restriction but because I had started the challenge while I was off on my rest days it worked out pretty well as I knew the circuit and what I had to do. The changes are happening too and even I can tell there is a difference everything is really tightening up and I am starting to feel and look leaner. One of the guys who works out in the gym at work mentioned how good I was looking in the gym on thurs. I value his opinion as he has really leaned down and looks fantastic now which of course I did mention some time ago. It is good to compliment people when they are achieving good results from their efforts.
  9. jaqi
Hellooooo how are you? I have had a good week thank you. I was on the wing moves job again on tuesday so another really busy day but have to say they pass very quickly when it is so busy. Then wed and thurs I was farmed out to another wing and so was put on the jobs off the wing... visits supervising wed and healthcare supervising on thur. Thursday was overtime that I wasn't expecting to get offered as I had put my name down for overtime in november. It's the first time I have wanted to do it as I really value my time off.
  10. jaqi
ooops sorry... association is when all the cons are out 'associating' with their buddies , playing pool/snooker, getting showers and making phone calls....oh and doing deals! I had a humdinger of a day today as wing moves officer I never stopped all day and then was giving the first night centre phone calls to the newbies this evening...they're a right rabble of ungrateful a.. holes! xxx
  11. jaqi
Hello Oz hope you had a good weekend. I went back to work today after my 10 days off. Sundays are always pretty laid back on the wing so I was able to sit and read my mag while watching over the association this afternoon. Up at 5am tomorrow and working till 730pm... won't have much time for reading as it will be a much busier day.

Did you have to work atall? x
  12. jaqi
What do you manage to fit in around shifts and training? Do you find like me that the training can take up a big chunk of time?
If I could meet someone local that enjoyed being really active and liked hiking and a game of squash or badminton then I would be in my element... it is a near impossible task though because I often find that those that like doing outdoorsy stuff don't like using the gym and vice versa. xxxx
  13. jaqi
I dance in my spare time... I do all types of partner dancing from ballroom/latin to rock n roll and modern jive...you name it and I probably dance it. I used to dance almost 7 nights a week and that isn't really classes but more social dancing so dancing for a good 3 to 5 hours depending whether it is midweek or weekend. I guess the dancing has a lot to do with keeping up my motivation to stay in shape as I am pretty good at it and so get a fair few people watching me when I am on the floor. If I feel fat then my confidence goes out the window. I felt good last night hahahaha had a great time.
  14. jaqi
Most of the policemen I know from being on the net a while always seem to be working... the shifts albeit probably the same hours as yours don't seem to be in any logical order?

I can tell you what my shifts are for the next 8 weeks as a rule... in fact apart from something drastic happening I could probably tell you what shift I am on this time next year lol. I self rosta my hours working 8 days on mostly 12/14 hours shifts then take 6/7 off. I could work the underlying shift pattern if I chose to do so and may have to in the future with workforce modernisation coming in to play
  15. jaqi
Glad to hear you enjoyed your weekend. What shifts do you have to do?

Can't say I did a whole lot... don't have too much money and don't really like to do things like walking etc on my own being billy no mates has it draw back no and again hahahahahah

I have a fat pic that I used to carry in my purse but that was really for those infuriating people that used to comment 'it's alright for you being nice and slim' I am sure they think it is easy for those of us who have dealt with being fat and done something about it and always have excuses why they can't do the same but it really is a daily fight against being fat ever again!
I get quite tired of hearing the same old same old excuses... 'I had 2/3 children' 'When you get to a certain age' etc...

I gave up alcohol over 9 years ago because it was a problem for me.
  16. jaqi
Hmmm let me think... weaknesses... coffee which I need to completely wean off but it is difficult because if I go out on a date then that is all I drink as I don't drink alcohol. Also, I know I am still not eating as much as I should do though what I do eat is high calorie.

Motivation comes from not ever wanting to be the fat overweight person I was ever again and also motivation comes from making my goals and knowing where I really want to be. Looking the best I can and be the healthiest that I can be are very important to me. I think that the reason a lot of people fail to reach their goal is because they either don't have a real goal in mind that they can visualise attaining and most don't actually write their goals down.

Hope you had a good weekend and didn't have to work it and are you on AFF? I noticed a photo this evening that was exactly like your one here! xxxxx
  17. jaqi
I have been searching for a new challenge and had to think hard about what I wanted to achieve and think my waist is the main area. I know everyone keeps saying you can't spot reduce and in all honesty I am not trying to do that because the abs plan I have chosen I will work in to my usual regime. I found it in this months issue of mens fitness mag...and being open minded will give anything a go. If you get the mag it is the article 'six pack science'
Anyway I am really glad I haven't lost all our conversation xxx Karen
  18. jaqi
hahahah silly me I have found them...phew thought I had lost them all or perhaps you didn't want to keep up the contact. Yes decided to take on the challenge on this site just to give added motivation to complete it. The last one I did was march to may (12 weeks) with the body for life challenge and I stuck avidly to it. I did a body analysis at the start and end of it and dropped my body fat from 33% to 26%, weight dropped by 4kg, increased muscle mass by 2.6kg and reduced my metabolic age from 45 to 37... there were a few other readings all of which were positive.
  19. jaqi
I have some weights and fitness equipment at home and often think about setting up a specific room for everthing but my daughter and her bf have moved in with me so not as much room for something like that at the mo. I am not sure I would be so motivated at home either... it is having the guys around that spurs me to work harder and I like people around me even if I am not really interacting with them. I see it as my little bit of socialising hahahaha...
  20. jaqi
yes I understand that as I worked with the SIB in germany and so understand the differences...

So how do you fit in your training around your work....do you get subsidised gym membership through the met? I am fortunate to be able to use the prison gym and when I am off on my rest days I use my local gym. It is nice to have the change of scenery but have a lot of banter in both gyms. The local one is just a small body building gym so doesn't have a pool or anything like that... more like a spit n sawdust one!
  21. jaqi
Hmmm well this morning was okay as there were only 6 families in... but this afternoon was a full house and there were a few making a complete nuisance of themselves so there may be a few closed visits for some selct prisoners over the next couple of weeks. I am on Library patrol tomorrow then two days on the wing landing which is mroe interesting. Having said that my friend works in the library and so I will no doubt have a good old chin wag when I see her. She comes out dancing with me on occasions. The librarians are very nice too and I also end up chatting with them for ages too.

Hope you didn't get called out today... I didn't realise beat bobbies did 'on call' Which do you prefer ... CID or uniform? xx
  22. jaqi
I have been working since wed and working right through to this wed coming... just on a normal day shift tomorrow, the only one in this set all the rest have been 12-14 hour shifts so will have done a fair few hours by wed night All the more reason to keep fit and strong.

I got to the gym this morning and had a pretty good session... felt good and strong. Work was pretty easy for the rest of the day and evening and should be easy enough tomorrow as I am just supervising visits...hate visits, screaming kids running about, chopsy wives and gf's and sitting 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon...I much prefer the wing where i am kept busy.

Hope you don't get called out. Are you CID or something? I did 7 years in the military police and both my brothers and brother in law were coppers!

    Chat soon xxx
  23. jaqi
What do you do workwise? I am a Prison Officer at Nottingham Prison. I am pretty tired this evening from a very busy day and worked till just passed 9pm and as I am up at 5am I am sort of feeling it now. I have a late start tomorrow so can have a little lie in but want to get to my local gym before going to work so can't lie in for too long I love my bed hahahaha .. have a great weekend.xx
  24. jaqi
Hello Oz, I noticed you was a fellow brit....thank you for the welcome. Found this site just prior to going back to work after my rest days so didn't have too much time to really get to grips with it and get reading the challenges...I have been back two days and have another 6 to do before I will have free time on my hands again. I can't access the net at work, which is probably just aswel as you can spend hours reading the posts on here. Where are you from? Your lats look great by the way! xx
  25. BigSnacks
Thanks, Oz. It's been a really frustrating week because I'm totally stoked to get started but the garage is a mess and when I go out to try and get it straightened up to clear out a spot for the weights, I get overwhelmed and then angry. My temper is one of those things I lost control of, which sucks because I used to be so laid back and fun to be around.
  26. LTrejo100
Well I wish you a very safe flight and the best of luck to your sister. I hope all goes well.
  27. LTrejo100
Well that's great timing for a freakin' strike lol. I always wind up packing last minute too. Well actually what will happen is that I'll pack a week in advance, have to unpack to get something out, re pack again, unpack again and so on and so on until the day we leave when I finally finish packing lol. But what can I say? How long are you going to be out there again?
  28. LTrejo100
Well... it's going well, I guess. It's work you know. Are you ready for your flight?
  29. LTrejo100

So what did you wind up naming your kitten?
  31. Daniel_Kemp
Hi _OZ_. I'm just going around the world to learn about different cultures, languages and people. I'm starting off with South Korea.
  32. LTrejo100
Thanks for that post, Oz. It really means a lot to me and it definitely keeps me motivated!
  33. LTrejo100
Thanks for the kick in the butt, OZ. I guess that's just what I needed. You're right (well of course you're right) I do need to honor myself and what I've started. I've given up on myself way too much in the past. I'm going to go train right now, but I just wanted to say thanks. How is your week coming along??
  34. LTrejo100
Hey Oz! So far this week I have been eating clean... which has actually gotten easier for me over the past couple months. I must admit that I haven't had a training session yet. :-/ I don't know what's wrong with me! I just feel really lazy and I have no energy! I will get in my work out clothes, get my weights and shoes on... and then nothing. I will sit/stand there holding my weights like a moron with no drive to lift them. Any suggestions? Thanks for the message :-D Hope you're doing better than I am!

Why will power and not pill power will help you lose fat and keep it off

by _OZ_ on 03-19-2010 at 04:45 AM
I recently posted in a forum thread where the original poster asked if there is a pill he can take to stop hunger. My response was as follows,

Develop will power. Pills are a temporary solution. You can't take them forever. And when you stop, any fat loss you achieved may be undone if you can't control your will power.

http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=123163713

I think this extends to fat loss diets and cardio routines too. Many diets are unsustainable

How much muscle can you gain?

by _OZ_ on 03-19-2010 at 04:05 AM
I think most people have very unrealistic expectations on how muscular they can become. This is caused by inappropriate role-models and the bodybuilding supplement and magazine industry.

The following linked article discusses this point further and provides some tools for determining how big you can get.

Planks - How to make them more challenging

by _OZ_ on 02-28-2010 at 11:23 AM
Planks are an exercise that are performed to increase the isometric strength and endurance of your midsection muscles in a neutral spine position.

The plank exercise can be performed face down to focus the exercise on the abdominals and lower back or sideways to focus it on the obliques

Once you get good at the front and side plank you will probably be able to maintain the position for a minute or more. You can either maintain this level of fitness or increase your strength

Muscle Size Expectations

by _OZ_ on 08-11-2009 at 03:01 PM
How much muscular size can you gain without bodybuilding drugs? Here are a few calculator’s I have come across.

John McCallum’s method
  1. Chest = 6.5 x wrist (use this figure for the rest of the calculations)
  2. Waist = 70% of chest
  3. Legs = 53% chest
  4. Neck = 37% chest
  5. Arms = 36% chest
  6. Calves = 34% chest
  7. Forearms = 29% chest
Stuart McRobert’s method

Start with height of 5ft 2in, 14in arms, calves and neck, 38in relaxed chest, 21in thighs, 28in waist. For every

How to revive stalled load progression

by _OZ_ on 08-04-2009 at 10:47 AM
There are times when moving up to the next heaviest dumbbell in the rack is not possible as the jump in weight is too much and it causes you to drop your reps too low to get the desired training effect. Similarly, when using machines or barbells, sometimes selecting the next heaviest load is too much of a leap in weight.

Traditionally, many people stick to the same weight and each workout attempt to do more reps. When they can do significantly more reps they then move up to the next
